Valid HTML allows for greater accessibility, cross-browser compatability, and can even possibly help your search engine rankings.

Now, the point of the articles describes how invalid HTML actually did better than valid HTML.
I've always thought that Google is not in the business of source code validation, and they never will be. They are in the RESULTS business. Many Valid HTML proponents always smack me upside the head when I tell them that Valid HTML is a beautiful thing, but not the most important thing, and I don't really think that it will ever be.
Google doesn't even pay attention to their own guidelines. One the of the Google guidelines is that it does not support or crawl web pages with the "&id=" parameter, but that's not true. Do any product specific search, as in an product you want to buy, like a this
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2005-09,GGGL:en&q=9 foot auto tilt umbrella
and what is the first result?
patioshoppers.com/shoppingcart/index.php?action=item&id=20
Will you look at that?
Crazy I tell you. But hey, what can I say? Google is a thing unto itself. Better not try to figure it out, cause you'll go bonkers.
